My Teaching Philosophy
Learn to listen
Listening is an essential part of music, and many lessons will revolve around a "ears" first approach. What sounds good? What needs improving? How did my favourite guitarist play that passage? All can be explored with active listening.
Discovery, experimentation and creativity
Exploring what's been learnt and putting it to the test with your own creative voice is one of the most rewarding aspects of learning a musical instrument. As such, it is a primary focus of many of my guitar lessons.
Music is a Language
Music is a language like any other and it is best learnt like one, through listening, imitating and improvising. Delving into music theory as a student progresses can then lay the groundwork for years of musical exploration.
About Me
I was born and raised in Cairns, and I have been passionate about playing guitar since the age of 8. The guitar is a versatile and expressive instrument that can be enjoyed whether you aspire to be in a band, as a soloist or just want to have fun experimenting with sounds.
I've worked as the guitarist/multi-instrumentalist and composer of the Duo Twelve Ballet, from which I have had the pleasure of opening for Australian acts such as Amy Shark & Vera Blue.
Alongside my 10 years experience teaching guitar, I've also completed a Bachelor of Music (Graduate with distinction) from the Central Queensland Conservatorium, furthering my own exploration into jazz and classical training. Pairing this knowledge with my blues background, I have continued to develop my teaching methods to approach an even broader range of topics and musical styles, whilst maintaining focus on practicality, creativity and fun.
Now, it's been 20 years since I first picked up a guitar, and I love to pass on what I've learnt to new musicians. I understand the passion that one can have for an instrument and enjoy being there to foster that passion and assist in each individuals personal development. I believe lessons should be above all fun and inspiring, and its my goal to get each student where they want to go.
